How does the society in your book manipulate people?

  1. Ayala:The society manipulates the people by making them believe that getting a surgery to be pretty, like everyone else, was for the good. Little does everyone know, it also changes everyone's personality in which they aren't even the same person anymore. My main character Tally wasn't old enough to get the surgery when her best friend, Peris, was. When she went to visit him, he said that they couldn't be friends until she was pretty. She knew that the real Peris would never say that.

    1. I agree because in my book when the main character Frey got feels, a surgery to control your feelings with buttons, she changed. She didn't ask for the surgery but a bot gave it to have anyways. She had control over what she was feeling and didn't reveal her true self to many people.

    2. I belive that your society, very much so, manipulates the people in it. I wonder what would happen if Tally never got the surgery and what punishment would be given to her.

  2. Hadley- In my book, companies that need the unwinding business to bring them money use the media to influence people. Ads about voting for the Unwind Accord, Section 15 B are made to distract people from the real problem. While many are debating which Unwind law to vote for, they don't remember that Unwinding shouldn't exist in the first place.

    1. Caleb Farrar- This is similar to my book because the Thunderhead sometimes takes people, makes them forget everything they know and be supplanted with new memories. In this case, even though the Thunderhead's intentions are good it is like you said, distracting them from the real issue, and no one will ever learn from that persons experiences. People are also implanted with "nanites", little robots with pain killers and emotional boosters that also help the human body heal. Sorrow is reduced to nothingness and no one will understand or learn from sadness, for joy is nothing without sorrow to compare it to. Like those ads these emotional boosters and new memories keep humanity from seeing the big picture

  3. Alejandra. My society in my book manipulates people by enforcing all the rules without no say towards the people. The people are told what the society wants them to believe and not the truth behind it. They keep things secret by threatening and disciplining them if they want to know the truth. The society considers this desire for knowledge as wrong and punishable.

    1. In my book, there also many unknown secrets and my book has a very strict society. In order to be an important part of the society you must be proper, and pretty. My book also has several strict rules, that come with harsh punishments even for the smallest things.

    2. My book does the same thing. People are forced to believe certain things and not question people about it. They are asked not to ask any questions about where they are or who they are. They just live life like they are told to.

    3. I agree, as in my book people are threatened if they try to revolt or ask to many questions. This leads them to live how they are told and cannot do what they want or eat very well.

Something like this happens in my book too. The people are so distracted with the war of their country that they really don't care who they are fighting and who they are in an alliance with, they just cling on to the fact that they must hate someone and they must love someone. This allows for the tables to turn very easily.

  4. Riley Ewing- The society in my book is very strict. It manipulates people because everything has to be done a certain way and the rules have to followed. If someone makes a mistake, they will be punished by their master, or if someone is different, nobody else wants to be around them. People in my book don't really get to state their own opinion on things because it may sound dumb to the more proper people.

    1. Aaliyah,
In my book there are also strict rules that have to be followed. If not followed there are strict punishments. Such as becoming factionless. If someone stands out and doesn't act according to their faction then they are killed.

    2. Ayala: This relates to my book because the Uglies have certain rules that they need to follow and if they don't follow them, they are risking being ugly forever.

    3. Annabel- In my book there are also strict rules. If they make any mistakes they are released which is what they call killed.

  5. Aaliyah,
The society in my book manipulates people because they're forced to make a life changing choice at the age of 16. Also they all live in diversity. These are called factions and there are 5 of them. When you turn 16 you choose where you want to live and train for the rest of your life. This is manipulating because if you make a choice you can't go back no matter what. If you don't choose your family's faction then you will never see them again. If you change factions then you look like an outcast or a transfer. If you choose where you want to go people see you as a trader. It's hard to make a decision to determine your lifestyle for ever.

    1. Hadey- I agree. Making a life-changing decision is hard enough without having to take into account that once you make your decision, you can never do anything else as long as you live. Seeing your family is a no, doing anything against your faction's rules is forbidden, and changing faction's or deserting is against the law. The pressure is on.

    2. Alejandra,
One of the significant things that are similar between our novels is that there are diverse communities. The problem, however, is that they don't get a choice to choose what they want to do. The people are already given what job they'll do for the rest of their life at birth! But, i also agree with you about making a single decision that impacts the rest of your life

In my book, there are families called first families that control cities. One family that controls the city of Shreve. In this city they use spy dust which is a type of dust they put in the air and can watch everything everywhere. In this city people can express their true opinion because they know their being watched. The father of this family also takes over other cities by deceiving them. They also have feels, which is synthetic feelings.

  7. Ely Charqueno: This book manipulates the characters in my book by making them all kill each other. The characters have to kill each other as a punishment. The people long before this, in this society, tried to raid the Capitol and failed. This meant a punishment would soon take them over. They called it the Hunger Games. The Capitol manipulates everyone by making some rich and some poor. Forcing the poor ones to starve and die while the rich ones thrive. This isn't the way it really has to be. But the Capitol makes them think that.

The society in "1984" uses the same principles.People are don't know what they are doing but they are working for a society that is hurting people, potentially their friends and families.

  8. The Thunderhead, an artificial intelligence that controls the world, is supposedly perfect, and serves the human race without fail. However, many come to know that it doesn't understand human emotion, so although the Thunderhead fully understands the actions people take when they experience emotion, it can never get how it feels. So the Thunderhead withdraws from humanity passing judgement on who can still communicate with the Thunderhead, and a young man named Greyson Tolliver, is the only one still able to communicate with it, but still keeps them alive. It attempts to mold humanity into the perfect state by punishing them for the collective actions of the human race, hoping it can manipulate them into doing what it wants it to do. The Thunderhead merely hopes for an efficient society, not a happy one, but since it can't understand it, the human race can never truly achieve their definition of perfection.

    1. This kind of relates to my book, Origin. As the Thunderhead doesn't understand how the people feel, the scientists in Origin don't even consider that Pia, the immortal test subject, has feelings. They kind of treat her the same way, by making her do things they think are best for her, not what she thinks are best. They put her in trial after trial, not considering she also has limits, they just may be farther than a normal human's.

  9. Johan - The society in my book treats people with disrespect. People are in a some sort-of prison that they live in, no one can get out or come in. So they are basically living in a prison with no interaction with the outside. They work as slaves for the person leading the prison.

  10. Annabel. The society in my book gives you one chance to mess up or make a mistake. When make a mistake once they give you a warning. After one warning if you still make mistakes they release you. When they say release what they really do is give you a shot and within seconds you are dead.

  11. Logan: How did the society of Canaan (the city of my book) manipulate citizens? Every 12 years, the Forgetting occurs, which means everyone forgets themselves and everyone else. The only memories is in your book, meaning if you don't have a book, you are Lost, who are basically the equivalent of orphans. The book can be modified by other people, which traces back to the question. This allows society in Canaan to manipulate citizens of Canaan. Fortunately, there is someone who knows everything, Nadia the Dyer's (originally Planter's) daughter, who has never forgotten. This can be useful for finding manipulators.

  12. In my book "Strange New World", Dahlia 16 is a clone. She has 4,999 more that are going to be killed, due to there being a flaw in her genome. She heads out to a different city to keep from being recalled and finds out that everyone else has parents, and that there is only one of each person. She finds her clone who lives a normal life like you and me, but is not supposed to. Her dad was infertile, so her mom asked a geneticist ( the person who makes clones ) to make her a embryo. He made more than one and switched Dahlia and Waverly - the girl who lives a normal life. All clones are made infertile, so the difference between Dahlia and Waverly is that Dahlia is that Dahlia is fertile. So Waverly's mother shows Dahlia that all her clones are still alive and that if she agrees to do a hormone transplant so Waverly can have children, she will buy all her clones so that she can build a city for them. Though in real life she will kill them.

In my book "The Hunger Games" There was a large war set before the events of the book in which 13 different districts (like states) fought with a place called the capitol. The capital had won and completely destroyed a district, it was the 13. Now the capitol shows remains of destruction and threatens to do that again to any other district. Now, to honor the districts victory, 14 unwilling victims, called tributes are forced to partake in a fight to the death. This fight is known as the hunger games. These threats are which keep each district in line, forcing them to make stuff for the capitol.

  14. Mason Farrar😎 - My book manipulates people as the scientists, who work with a girl named Pia, don't let Pia not allowed to leave the labs. They try to make her happy, and they tell her she is perfect, so she never tries to leave, so they can create more immortals. Recently, Pia found out that she isn't doing perfectly on all the tests when she overhears the scientist talking about how they can't have her on the team yet, as she isn't doing well enough on the test they said she always passed. The scientists just wanted her to stay, as they wouldn't have jobs without her.

In my book, "1984", people are manipulation is one of the sole ways on which the society, Ingsoc, runs. The society has gotten its people to trust it, and manipulation is easy after that. Some citizens, such as my character, Winston, even work to help manipulate people by erasing ideas and such. They barely even understand that what they are doing is to hurt them and their friends and families.

How does the character(s) change or adapt due to the existing society?
